So, sticking with the 1 Peter line of study, Peter points out an interesting analogy, he likens Christians to infants who crave spiritual food.
Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment, now that you have had a taste of the Lord’s kindness. 1 Peter 2:2-3
The larger context encapsulating is that of having been “born again” as God’s children and the words of God being that which nourishes his children.
My sister-in-law had a child last year, whenever her newborn desired to be fed there was nothing but his mother which could satiate his appetite. Likewise we as Christians can never really be satisfied but through hearing or reading the word of God. For all intensive purposes, the bible, being a collection of transcriptions of experiences and interactions between men, women, and God serves as our word of God. If his word is what nourishes us, is it any wonder that Christians who don’t receive spiritual nourishment via the word of God can sometimes appear anemic and powerless?
Now, many would say “I go to church,” “I listen to sermons,” or “I read Christian books!” There is nothing wrong whatsoever with these things, I love scouring youtube for videos from Dr. Mike Heiser, Dr. Timothy Keller, or Francis Chan; they are all phenomenal teachers and incredibly inspiring. They could never take the place of the source material though, just as a child won’t receive nourishment by listening to child that has, we won’t receive the fulfillment of nourishment without directly interacting and meditating on the source.
My message and challenge to the reader is that you too can experience a deep and fulfilling nourishment through reading and meditating on the word of God!
